Amorella: THE ENGINE ROOM
analog photographs, shot on Leica film format, digital print / 2019

“The artist returned to the steadfast ferry Amorellaafter after her exhibition in Split and then brought to Zagreb another series of photographs depicting the engine room and crew unseen by passengers, evoking a time when Croatian shipbuilding proudly held first place in Europe and third in the world. Today, when shipyards have struggled significantly and immense shipbuilding expertise is fading away, Duška Boban’s works works serve as a reminder of the ambition we are losing and the opportunities we are neglecting.
By focusing on labor and production as crucial elements that place a city on the global map, Duška Boban continues her long-standing artistic commitment to critically reflect on the city’s identity through this project. In Split, the exhibition starts with advocating for a Living Museum of the Sea, envisioned for the Dalmacijavinobuilding, designed by Stanko Fabris in the City Port. In Zagreb, the artist connects to the city through Marijan Haberle, the architect who designed the buildings of both the Technical Museum and the Shipbuilding Institute.
