2019 – 2020 _ Amorella ~ A Floating City / Technical Museum Nikola Tesla in Zagreb
photo exhibition at Technical Museum Nikola Tesla in Zagreb, curated by Jasminka Babić and Markita Franulić; organised by Technical Museum Nikola Tesla
Amorella – A Floating City is Duška Boban’s newest project in which this visual artist from Split examines the rich heritage of modern shipbuilding industry in Split and the importance of its active role in the formation of Split’s contemporary identity. With a series of analogue photographs taken in late 2018 aboard Amorella, the famous ferryboat that still services the Baltic route between Sweden and Finland, the author conveys fragments of the ship’s daily life, but equally follows traces of memory of the time she was constructed in 1988 in the shipyard in Split. This series of photographs was first showcased in April 2019 in the gallery of the Multimedia Cultural Center in Split, and for this presentation in the Technical Museum Nikola Tesla, the author added a new series of photographs of the engine room and the ship’s crew, taken during the author’s second stay aboard Amorella. A separate exhibition unit is composed of photographs of 33 ship models built between 1937 and 2012, that are the property of Brodosplit and were once part of the former Brodosplit Museum collection. With the photographs, the display also brings stories about the fate of these ships and opens the question of the future presentation of this valuable heritage.Duška Boban graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb in 2000. In 2013, she completed the postgraduate study in visual communications, Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where she conducted a research on urban identity which resulted in the final master’s degree thesis entitled “Public space and civic participation: Activism and Cultural Practices in Split during the last decade”.
